Itjareng Vocational Training Centre
Itjareng Vocational Training Centre in Maseru, Lesotho, is the country’s sole vocational institution dedicated to students with speech / hearing impairment, mental illness and physical disabilities. It accommodates up to 94 learners with a two-year programme focused on life and practical skills. The school, registered under the Ministry of Education, employs 12 staff and relies on both paid personnel and unpaid volunteers. Fees are set at about £550 pa, with 50 students supported by the National Manpower Development Service. Some of those that are not part of the lucky 50 still face financial hardship, resulting this year in outstanding fees for 15 students. Resources are limited, with outdated equipment, and students are required to purchase their own supplies; the school maintains livestock and crops for self-sufficiency.
Originally established in 1988 by Christian Blind Mission, diminishing external and government funding has left the school dependent solely on student fees, which cover all operational costs but are insufficient for long-term sustainability. The curriculum offers majors in Metal Work, Carpentry & Joinery, Leather work, and Sewing, alongside compulsory support subjects (including Agriculture, Entrepreneurship, Computer and Sign Language).
The headteacher is seeking external assistance, including student sponsorship, a tools fund and equipment upgrades, to support the school’s continued operation.
